Internet break out in the jungle

Well… our hosts moved away, and we’re as far from the web as we would in the middle of the jungle…. The connection is my great Nokia 6820 at 5.1Kb/s at it’s best. Short update though:

- One Iphone ordered.  - Yeeeey! Should get it within a week or so!

- College is great. Fascinating to get “under the skin” at a church which is up-to-date. Not “out of date”, as too many churches unfortunately. These guys really seems to have put a whole lot of thought into it and the way each department shares about how they think and work is impressive.

- We have a car A Daihatsu Applause 1991. It’s nice.

- We’ll finally get permanent accomodation one of these days. We’ll tell more when we get there.

- I can’t wait to get on a surf board. We visited Manly beach the other day. You won’t believe it, but it actually came some SNOW there. But it seem to disturb the surfers..

- Australia per definition: “No worries.”  … an expression you’ll hear a thousand times every day.

Day #1: First day at school :-)

What’s Hillsong College actually like? - That question we’ve been asking ourselves since we started thinking about HILC as an alternative for Bible College and Pastoral training. What are their basic values? What’s their vision, thoughts, goals etc. Some information you’ll of course find on their website. On this blog we’ll be telling you our experiences on our own journey also at Hillsong College. So here we go - first day:

First day

We arrived just on time, 8:30. The weather is freezing cold. On our way in everyone we meet greets with a big smile.

The morning sets off Hillsong style with some 25 minutes of great worship. The principal of the hills campus, Lee Burns, welcomes us with an inspiring and humoristic touch. He tells about Brian Hustons vision for Hillsong church and the values of the school. During an 1 hour break everyone is given a nice t-shirt and a school bag - cool. Talked to an american woman, a Swede, couple of American guys, and a Norwegian girl. And some others. Great. The school is packed of Americans and Norwegians. If I don’t catch up on the Austrailian accent I can still train on the Norwegian one.

The atmosphere in general is enthusiastic, and Lee points out the importance of letting this be a year when God can work in and through you, and transform you. He actually addressed the “jante-law” (common in the northern countries) and promised that it will be dealt with. Liked that.

I left first day of school encouraged and very eager to see what’s to come, looking very much forward to what God has in store this coming year!

We visited Sydney center - the Pope himself joined in :-)

Sydney center, neverending crowds of WYD SYD 08 people, Sushi, the Pope and China Town - a few of the things that we experienced today! Finally we had a nice day without any “must dos” and time to look around in the city. It was total carnival atmosphere in the city, as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims were there. Even the pope himself had decided to show up.

We felt like trying something new for dinner - and ended up at a Japanese restaurant. Always wanted to try Sushi, and this was the day. It was nice. Haven’t ever eaten it before. It was interesting and a nice experience at least half way through. But I also think I’ve had enough Sushi for the coming 3 years

Något litet om vad vi har hittat på här de senaste dagarna

Vi har snart bott här i West Pennant Hills en hel vecka! Tiden går så otroligt fort.

Senaste vecka har vi hunnit uppleva och se en hel del nytt. Genast då vi anlände från flyget sov vi några timmar här hos Adam för att sedan åka iväg på mitt livs största och atmosfärsstarka möten! Vi deltog i fyra möten under torsdag och fredag. Kan inte riktigt förklara med ord känslan att stå högst uppe på en arena med 27.000 andra människor och prisa Jesus! Grymt bra musik och helt otroligt stark lovsång. Att höra dånet av rösterna i lovsången av hela denna folkhop var något av de mäktigaste jag hört och upplevt. Man kan nog inte förstå utan att uppleva det själv. Tror jag.

Vi har träffat några härliga finska vänner, Maria och Samuli som också går på Hillsong college, snackat om livet här - då de redan är insatta i livet här efter 6 månader på ort och ställe! Vi har öppnat bankkonton och skaffat telabbonemang, köpt en 5 cm tjock kartbok för att kunna orientera oss fram på egen hand i dessa kringelikrokiga väglandskap, besökt en gigantisk kristen bokshop med massvis av böcker och Biblar. Jag köpte faktiskt en riktigt porche-bibel- röd, glansig och läcker! Igår hann jag också med feber och halsen sjuk. Så jag sov hela dagen och Johan fixade allt möjligt här “hemma”. Vi åt morgonmål ute i trädgården bland citron-, appelsinträd och palmer

IDAG

Vi sov båda jätte dåligt i natt. Vi har väldigt kallt här var vi bor på natten. De är enkla fönster, och dörrarna (de finns flera av dem i vårt rum) har springor vid golvet så de drar väldigt. Och då man sätter värmeblåsaren på blir det fort för hett, så vi har varvat mellan att frysa och att svettas de senaste nätterna, och särskilt i natt. (Inte undra på att man kan bli lite flunssig här). Men tack Jesus, trots det var min feber borta idag, fast halsen ännu sjuk.

Vi försov oss lite och fick skynda väldigt för att hinna med bussen till Seven Hills! Men vi hann och hittade tom rätt Där träffade vi Maria och Samuli som plockade upp oss. Vi skulle nämligen kolla in två hus idag tillsammans med dem. Efter mycket från och till så kommer vi ändå att söka ett gemensamt hus! Det känns jätte kul!

Vi föll pladask för det första huset vi kollade in, som dessutom har en hyra som skulle vara riktigt passlig - ett tvåvåningshus med 3 sovrum, 3 badrum, ett stort kök med stort angränsande vardagsrum, ytterligare ett litet allrum, 2 garage och en riktigt fin bakgård! Vi vill ha det! SÅ är det. Vi åkte genast till Maria och Samuli och skrev fantastiska bostadsansökningar och förde dem genast till förmedlaren!! Vi hoppas verkligen att huset skall bli vårt! Tur var det inte så många andra intresserade på just det huset. Vi får veta redan i morgon om huset blir vårt eller inte! Jaaa…

Vi kollade också in ett annat hus. Området var jätte fint med underbar utsikt - men det hjälpte inte mycket då vi skyndade genom husvisningen för att få komma ut tillbaka. Huset var allt annat än trevligt!

Projekt två för dagen var att kolla in en bil, en väldigt billig bil - men alla bilar vi hitta idag var allt för dyra.

På hemvägen träffade vi ett underbart äldre par i en liten mataffär. De var så vänliga och gulliga och pratsamma! De trodde vi var från england eftersom vi pratade en så ypperlig brittisk engelska De var ju uppmuntrande.

Vi värmde just en micro lasagne, Johan tar en tupplur och jag tror vi snart ska kolla in en romantisk film som Adam just kom in och rekommenderade; The Notebook! Få se vad det är!

Hillsong Conference 2008 - photos

Å helt plötsligt var vi ju på andra sidan jorden!

Tänka sig så allt kan ändras så drastiskt på några få timmar. Jag menar allt.

Från att ha allt vackert och ordnat där hemma i haga, med alla saker på rätt ställe, ett ordnat liv i allmänhet, rutinarbete varje dag mellan 8 och 16, en hel hög med härliga vänner som man gillar och älskar och kan hänga med när man har lust, en församling där man typ känner alla, familjen nära och allt möjligt annat bekvämt och tryggt….

…så har vi plötsligt landat i ett nytt gigantiskt, främmande land. Massa främmande människor i alla färger, man måste tala engelska (som tillsvidare går trögt), inget ansikte i hela stan eller kyrkan är ens halvbekant, vi har inget eget hem (so far) vi har inget ordnat liv (so far), vi har allt vad vi äger i 6 kappsäckar (efter fyra dagar här är allt huller om buller), vi sover på ett golv i ett vardagsrum hos människor vi just håller på att lära känna…

Men de härliga är att det känns så…ja det känns verkligen härligt! Det känns som gott och rätt och kul på samma gång.

Just då man kommer så här utan att veta så mycket om den nya kulturen, inte har tak över huvudet, och man vet att de finns en miljon grejer som behöver fixas innan allt rullar sådär helt smooth, Då har Gud möjlighet att hjälpa en. Det känns som att man blir sådär lagom beroende av Honom

Jag kan berätta: förra veckans onsdag fick vi veta att de som vi hade tänkt flytta ihop med ändå inte har möjlighet att skaffa hus med oss här, och då vi efter flera dagars väntan fick svar från College här att inte de heller har möjlighet att ge oss logi under den närmaste tiden undrade vi vart vi skulle ta vägen. Saken är ju den att vi inte känner någon här!! Eller ja, just då vi tänkte som så, kom vi på att vi ju fakiskt kände 1 kille- eller åtminstone helt lite! Adam heter han. Han e med i Hillsong Church och vi stötte på honom vid Kampen i Helsingfors förra sommaren då vi hade en outreach där från församlingen! Och ja, vi är vänner på facebook sedan dess och hittade kontaktuppgifter där. Så vi ringde helt enkelt honom! Och han tyckte de passade fint att vi kom och bo hos honom och hans två kämppisar tills vi hittar ett eget hem Isn´t it awesome? Gud e så kul - som jag brukar säga

Australia first impressions:

Sydney Airport: Not that huge.
Well, we only saw Terminal 1, but it wasn’t that big really.

Attitude: Polite, helpful & relaxed
Even when people bump into you just a little bit, they apologize.

Weather: freezing COLD!
I don’t feel stupid for taking my winter jacket with me. In contrary. It’s like Finish fall, like october. +4 in the morning, somewhat warmer in the afternoon.

Sydney: Huge, interesting, international.
I’m looking very much forward to exploring this city. Seems like the place where all nations are represented.

Hospitality: Great!
Our friend Adam (who we met a year ago at an outreach in Helsinki) picked us up at the Airport and has accomodated us (until we find a house of our own) where he and two other guys live. We’re greatful for that!

Favourite expression: Good, good!

Hillsong Conference: Indeed great!
We happened to arrive in Sydney 10th of July, so we could join the Hillsong Conference for two days.

Slow Time

I enjoy travelling bye train a lot. It’s one of those times when you actually can’t run around or be engaged in a lot of things or hassle with this and that. When you just sit in your seat, and have time to let your thoughts wander. And suddainly you find your self connected to your inner self. Where a thought doesn’t come in as disturbing, or stressing, because the next two or five or ten ours you still can’t do anything much about what ever comes to you mind except for… continue your travel. That is what slow time is about. When life isn’t about minutes, not even hours. But more about just existing.

A friend of mine who works with leadership issues on top level at Ericsson said that he finds it very easy to see if a person also spends Slow Time regularely, or not. People spending Slow Time has another depth of view on things, and usually has been able to deal with personal issues in a completely different way compared to others.

The western society doesn’t seem to know much about Slow Time, or ‘just existing’. Even less so the culture in big cities. Still i find it clear that Slow Time is a necessity, for everyone’s well being and to connect deeper with God. Running around and getting a lot of things done, is nice and… get’s a lot of things done. But to grow inwards, and to have a sharp mind requires Slow Time.

In that sense the last 26 hours on the airplane have been indeed great. Just a moment ago I read from the book of Ecclesiastes chapter nine and ten listening to Chris Botti’s album ‘Italia’, and having the most content feeling in a long time.
Now it’s about three and a halv hours left of the flight. I’m really excited to arrive in Sydney, and looking forward to spend hopefully a whole lot of Slow Time through the coming years here.

Byebye Finland….

Many thoughts has gone through my head the last days. Leaving family and friends and Finland to live at least a year possibly three on the other side of the globe does indeed give perspective - already before it actually happens. Cruising the last time through the finish archipelago, the last drive through Helsinki, making the last phone calls to friends (on Finish ground), and eating the last lunch with family makes you valuate things that have been part of you everyday life before. And I must say, every bit of my life I’ve felt of GREAT value. Leaving life in Finland is like leaving the best life I could imagine, but still doing so, knowing that God wants to give more, show more and do more.
